When you hear this sound (bing), turn the page

snow white

Jude loves the books on CD that he can listen to.  They are just like the ones we listened to as kids, only we did it with records and cassette tapes.  He will sit still and listen and it is just amazing.  Sadly, we don’t have that many of them.

So, I got this idea.  What if I recorded myself reading a book.  I could even get out the xylophone for the page-turn ding.  I could do this for some of his favorite books — especially the ones that there don’t already seem to be recordings of.

THEN, I got an even bigger idea.  What if there are some of you who would also want to do this.  We could each record ourselves reading one of our favorite children’s books and upload the mp3 of it to a dropbox or something and then we could not only have recordings of an assortment of children’s books, but we could also have them done by an assortment of people and not just boring Mommy all the time.

So, if I figure out a way to do this, is there anyone interested?

Update: I started a facebook group to work on this.  If you would like to join, it is here:  <a href=”https://www.facebook.com/groups/472032719513386/”>When you hear the (BING!), turn the page</a>

My American Idol Top 13

Ok, so my understanding is that there will be a top 13 picked tomorrow.  They mentioned something about America picking 5 boys, so my guess is that we will pick 5 girls and 5 guys and then the judges will save the remaining 3 to make up a top 13.

It’s always tough to do my picks on who I really think will stay and not who I want to stay. Here are my picks and my notes.

The boys

The Girls

If you want to get in on the selections, the google doc is here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Atvjpkhz8UMQdEYzdTlFMG9xVXNkN3ppcVZBX0VfdHc  Just add a column and play along.

American Idol 2012

I was working on our American Idol Pool (snarkfest?  hangout?) at google docs today and was looking for a good list of the top 42.  It was harder to find than I thought.  I found this site that said that they had them, but they only had 31 on their list.  Still, it saved me some typing.  I went to the main AI page and tried to find a good season 11 list.  They did have a picture of everyone, which was nice.  Downside?  The last 6 or so people were all listed as being named Reed Grimm.  I do have a list now and it is pretty good, although I think I have one extra*.  If you need it, here it is:

Early favorites?  Early love-to-hates?

Gifts for the Goonies lover

Etsy provides a never-ending supply of awesome Goonies-related items.  Here are just a few of them.  Full confession time: 1) The truffle shuffle makes me sad, 2) Sloth is meh and 3) “Goonies never say die” is cute, but I give bonus points for more obscure quotes.

Pixel People - The Goonies - PDF Cross-stitch PatternWant to make the gift yourself?  How about this cross-stitch pattern of the Goonies crew?  It is $7 and made by weelittlestitches.  I love the symmetry of the characters.  Despite being so tiny, you can really tell who is who.

Raise your hand if you don’t like duct tape wallets.  Really?  You are Goonies Duct tape walletlying.  Duct tape wallets are awesome.  This one features sillouettes of the characters and has 6 credit card slots.  It is also $7 and is made by lunasuniquegifts.

The Goonies mini-prints - set of 9 prints

If you love me, you will buy me this next one.  Nine itsy bitsy prints of the goodies and the baddies from the Goonies.  What could be better than a 2″ tall Fratelli?  These are $12 and created by TimmyK.

Goonies 8x10 Art Print

I’ve had my eye on this one for a while now.  It is an 8×10 print of the boys when they first find the map.  I’m not sure that Mikey is exactly perfect, but I love the colors.  Mouth and Chunk are really good.  This print is $15 and was created by mirandadressler.

Goonies -This is MY wish -hand stamped quarter pendant

Ok, I will limit myself to just one more.  How about some jewelry?  This pendant is a quarter with the words “This is my wish” hand stamped into it.  You know, from the wishing well scene?  The only downside, as I see it is that the coin is from 1987 and the movie was made in 1985.  I imagine most people wouldn’t even question it, but I just thought I’d mention that I noticed it.  Otherwise?  LOVE it.  This pendant is $10 and made by SpiffingJewelry.

Legos for Girls – as if they weren’t already

"Hi. I'm Olivia, and I want to be your Lego Friend"Lego has been doing a lot of market research and is going to be coming out with a new line for girls.  Phrasing it this way kinda wants to make me puke, but the actual stuff I have seen is pretty cool.

Here is the the complete article from business week, but this quote was the most interesting part to me:

“Then there are the lady figures. Twenty-nine mini-doll figures will be introduced in 2012, all 5 millimeters taller and curvier than the standard dwarf minifig. There are five main characters. Like American Girl Dolls, which are sold with their own book-length biographies, these five come with names and backstories. Their adventures have a backdrop: Heartlake City, which has a salon, a horse academy, a veterinary clinic, and a café. “We had nine nationalities on the team to make certain the underlying experience would work in many cultures,” says Nanna Ulrich Gudum, senior creative director.

The key difference between girls and the ladyfig and boys and the minifig was that many more girls projected themselves onto the ladyfig—she became an avatar. Boys tend to play with minifigs in the third person. “The girls needed a figure they could identify with, that looks like them,” says Rosario Costa, a Lego design director. The Lego team knew they were on to something when girls told them, “I want to shrink down and be there.””

Here is a hacker’s workshop that they are coming out with.  The colors are a little pink for my taste, but I’d still totally buy this for either of my kids.  You’ll notice that the minifigs are a little bigger than mr/ms yellowhead.

I can’t wait to see what other kids they have set up.  You know what else would be awesome?  If they could wear Polly Pocket Clothes.

Google Plus

Dante CirclesAre you using it?  I’m really enjoying the coziness of it.  It doesn’t have all of the wacky overwhelmingness of Facebook.  I like the possibilities provided by the circles, although I am typically of the belief that one shouldn’t put anything on the internet that they don’t want the world to see.

I’ve had an amusing week or so because someone put me in a SWTOR group and shared it.  Until this happened, I didn’t even know that SWTOR is a new Star Wars MMORPG that may or may not be in beta right now.   I’ve had quite a few people randomly add me, of these, I’ve added some back.  I mean, honestly, in a venn diagram these SWTOR peeps and I have quite a bit of overlap.  Checking out all of these people and the diversity of their profiles and posts (or lack thereof), it has inspired me to put together a little bit on how to make new friends on Google+.

#1 – Upload a freaking picture.  I don’t care if it is you, your dog, your neighbor’s dog or what, but if you don’t have a picture to represent yourself in some way, you basically don’t exist in my mind.  Even if I have to think about you as “purple turtle guy,” I want to be able to recognize you by sight.  Even better, upload 5 pictures so your little profile montage gets filled.

#2 – Fill in your profile.  It doesn’t have to be detailed.  Additionally, you need to make sure your profile is public.  Some folks have their info locked down so tightly that I can’t see their profile page at all.  Why add me if you are not going to share anything with me.  That’s kinda creepy.

#3 – Make some posts public.  I know people are all super-psyched about this circle thing, but if you put ALL of your posts in circles, then nobody new can see what you are talking about.  Sure, you might be awesome, but only the 32 people in your X circle or the 213 people in your Y circle that you share with know it.  If you want new people to find you, post publicly so your posts are searchable.

#4 – Reply to people’s posts.  If you think someone is cool or your like their post, give it a +1 or a comment.  Social media is all about the interaction and people aren’t posting to hear themselves talk.  I’ve also found that when I reply to someone, if another reader agrees, they might come and look me up.

If any of you need help getting started in Google+, I’d love to help wean you from the madness of Facebook and the constraint of Twitter.  Come and visit.
